Specific Mass, Apparent Specific Mass and Coarse Aggregate Absorption

The specific mass is the ratio between the mass of the dry aggregate and its volume, without considering the pores permeable to water. The apparent specific mass is the ratio between the aggregate mass and its volume, including water permeable pores.

The volume determinations are made on the hydrostatic balance, by the difference in the mass of the material in the air and submerged. Absorption is the increase in aggregate mass due to the filling of its pores by water, expressed as a percentage of its dry mass.
