Asphalt Petroleum Cement or CAP is a semi-solid or solid product at room temperature, and liquid at high temperatures. It presents thermoplastic behavior, that is, it becomes liquid if heated, and returns to its original state after cooling. It is almost completely soluble in benzene, trichlorethylene and carbon disulfide.

Obtained through the petroleum distillation process, it belongs to the family of bituminous materials, used in numerous applications, including: paving, waterproofing, protection against corrosion and electrical uses. In the paving area, it stands out in the uses: asphalt concrete, pre-mixed, sand-asphalt and surface treatment. As a recommendation for good handling, it should not be heated above 177 ° C, under the risk of oxidation and thermal cracking of the binder.
